Albury Wodonga Health is proud to announce Brooke Turner as the recipient of the inaugural Tom Northam Memorial Travelling Scholarship.

This prestigious scholarship, valued at up to $10,000, will enable Ms Turner to attend the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Forum in the USA later this year.

Ms Turner is the Clinical Safety and Governance Manager at AWH and is thrilled to be awarded the inaugural scholarship.

‘It is truly humbling to receive such an honour,’ she said, ‘and a privilege to be part of Tom’s legacy, built on a passion for lifelong learning and a pursuit of knowledge.’

‘The forum I’ll be attending is the peak industry event for quality improvement in healthcare worldwide.

‘It provides an invaluable opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and skills in quality improvement, while exploring critical issues such as patient and workforce safety, equity, climate change, and the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

‘I'll learn about cutting-edge strategies and tools to help me drive improvements and contribute to the broader goals of the Clinical Safety and Quality Unit team.

‘My sincere thanks to Tom’s family – his wife Erin who presented the scholarship and his parents Bill and Cathy who attended the presentation.

‘I’d also like to thank the Albury Wodonga Health Foundation for funding the scholarship,’ Ms Turner said.

Kim White, Chief of Nursing and Midwifery, said Brooke was a worthy recipient of the scholarship.

‘Brooke embodies the values that defined Tom’s career – a commitment to lifelong learning, patient-centered care, and the desire to lead improvement in healthcare,’ she said.

‘Her passion for quality improvement mirrors Tom’s dedication to excellence in nursing. As a co-project lead in enhancing stroke care, she is already making a tangible impact at AWH, and we know this opportunity will only further her ability to drive meaningful change.

‘As many of you know, Tom fought a courageous battle against cancer, showing resilience and bravery that left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

‘It is fitting that this scholarship be awarded to such a worthy candidate,’ Kim said.

The Tom Northam Memorial Travelling Scholarship reflects AWH’s commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence in healthcare.
