To celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, we are highlighting the contributions of women from across Albury Wodonga Health. This year’s theme is March Forward: For All Women and Girls. It is an opportunity to champion change, advocate for women’s rights, equality and empowerment, and celebrate the many ways in which women make a difference to our community and our world.

Meet Associate Professor Annabel Martin

I am a Nephrologist, General and Obstetric Medicine Physician and serve as the Director of Physician Education at AWH, as well as the Head of the Albury Campus for the CSU School of Rural Medicine.

In my roles, I have the privilege of mentoring, teaching, and supporting medical students, junior doctors, and physician trainees throughout their careers, fostering a positive workplace culture through collaboration, kindness, and empowerment of team members.

I have had the opportunity to develop networks between AWH and metropolitan health services to provide comprehensive physician training from start to finish. I am also actively involved in advocating at both state and national levels to address challenges in training and workforce distribution. Additionally, I played a key role in the development and communication of the rural, regional and remote physician strategy with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Reflections on women’s equality and representation . . .

Women are increasingly being offered more opportunities to take on key leadership roles across Australia, with a rising number of women serving on boards and as CEOs. This shift has promoted a more collaborative leadership approach, emphasising team engagement, collective success, and the adoption of leadership qualities commonly associated with female leadership styles.

For the past 15 years, female medical students have outnumbered their male counterparts in Australian medical schools, leading to a more diverse workforce across all specialties and a gradual rise in female representation in senior roles. This trend is contributing to positive changes in workplace culture within health services.

On International Women’s Day . . .

I will celebrate with my CSU medical students by hosting an ‘International Women’s Day Inspiring Stories’ session, where each student will share the story of a woman who has inspired them.

This year’s theme March Forward: For All Women and Girls is an inspiring and energising call to action for the world - championing both girls and women to have equal access to everything necessary to live safely and realise their full potential with the gifts they have been given. This is truly my hope and motivation and a wonderful theme for International Women’s Day.
