There's been positive feedback from ED staff for ongoing Cultural Education by AWH Emergency Department Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Charmaine Bell.
The sessions aim to assist staff best understand how to support culturally safe care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients while in the Emergency Department.
Charmaine also explains:
- The meaning of Acknowledgement/Welcome to Country
- Sorry Business - paying respect to the loss of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients in ED and the spiritual connection to the ‘dreaming’
- Yindyamarra - a gift from the Wiradjuri people, meaning to live with respect
- Open Yarning - respectful and informal conversations to share and receive knowledge
Further education is planned to detail the customs and practices of Men’s/Women’s business.
