Just a Farmer showcases the resilience and strength of rural communities while shedding light on their unique mental health challenges. In regional areas, where isolation and stigma often hinder open conversations, it is essential that we elevate these issues, fostering understanding and encouraging vital dialogue among families, friends, and support services.

This year, World Mental Health Day (10 October) is celebrating the importance of meaningful connections and how, when it comes to mental health, meaningful connections matter. This screening represents a unique opportunity to lead our region toward effective, integrated support for those in need, reinforcing Albury Wodonga Health’s commitment to enhancing community connections and improving mental health outcomes.

Following the screening, attendees will have the chance to listen to a thoughtful panel discussion featuring:

  • Leila McDougall, Writer, Producer, and Lead Actor of Just a Farmer
  • Stacy Read, CEO, Lifeline Albury-Wodonga
  • Russell Maher, Nurse Practitioner (Mental Health), Albury Wodonga Health
  • Jarryd Williams, Program Manager of Community Recovery and Resilience, Gateway Health

This panel is an opportunity to hear from experienced healthcare and community leaders who will provide valuable insights, discuss the unique challenges faced by our communities and the resources available to support those in need.

Dr. Lucie Shanahan, Chief Operations Officer (Allied Health and Mental Health) at Albury Wodonga Health, said, “We are deeply committed to enhancing mental health outcomes in our community. Hosting this screening is a crucial step in bringing often-hidden challenges faced by rural families into the public eye.”

“By increasing awareness and encouraging dialogue, we aim to create a more supportive environment for those in need.”

Stacy Read, Chief Executive Officer at Lifeline Albury Wodonga added, “Addressing mental health needs in rural areas is essential for the wellbeing of our communities. We are proud to be involved in and support this important event, helping to raise awareness around a topic that is often stigmatised.

“It's vital to continue conversations like these to improve understanding and health outcomes in our regional and rural communities. Together, we can break down barriers and reduce stigma surrounding mental health challenges.”

Jarryd Williams, Program Manager Community Recovery and Resilience at Gateway Health noted, “The resilience and strength of rural communities are both remarkable and inspiring.”

“This event not only underscores the importance of community support but also highlights the resources available to those who need them. We look forward to engaging with attendees and advancing the conversation on mental health.”

Together, we can build a stronger, more connected community where mental health advocacy is a priority, and support is always within reach.
